Last night (early morning in the UK), the Saturdays revealed their new single, “30 Days,” bringing them back onto the music scene after their tour and Una’s pregnancy. Judging by the single cover, it seems the girls are rereleasing “On Your Radar,” a fantastic album that sadly bombed on the charts. With the amazingness of last year’s “Notorious” and “All Fired Up,” has “30 Days” met the mark and will it help the group’s awful album sales? Here are both of our opinions on this new track:

D: People who know me well know that I dig ballads, mid-tempo dance ones included. I’m sure the song will soon be playing in clubs in Ibiza. The build-up in the verses works well, leading to a catchy chorus. That being said, the problem I have with the song is that it ends more abruptly than I would have liked. Una takes the bridge and sounds great, but it lasts for approximately 12 second before the song goes into the chorus and… ends. Vanessa does not bring as much power either, leaving the end a bit empty and sparse (like when the club or radio DJ the radio cuts off the song off before it hits the peak).

While I think the hook of the song is infectious, this is not nearly as unique as “All Fired Up” or as catchy as “Higher” from two years ago, so whether this song will win them new fans is debatable. Nor can this song live up to the mid-tempo tracks created by Girls Aloud (think “Call the Shots”). Perhaps these comparisons are unfair – but ultimately I’m still a fan.

C: I love the Saturdays. I tend to stick up for them despite their (and their label’s) faults and failures, and I am rooting for them to become as successful as they can be. However, there’s always just something missing…and I had extremely high hopes that this single would help solidify their position as the UK”s biggest girl group (or at this point…the only  successful girl group). Were my expectations met? Kind of. I do like “30 Days” a lot – it has a great chorus, has the melancholy feeling combined with a thumping beat and the girls sound great. “Faster” was my favorite from the last album and this sounds quite similar – though I like “Faster” better. I also agree that the last chorus should be much more epic and needs some big adlibs – something that Vanessa can sadly no longer handle as well as she used to.

I can definitely see this song growing on me as I continue to play it and see the video/performances – but is this the best song the Saturdays have ever done? No. But is it at the standard they’ve set for their singles? Yes…but I don’t think it’s enough to help them gain more popularity. I hope it helps them sell more albums because they really do have some great album tracks, and it’ll be interesting to see how this fares on radio. I also look forward to the b-sides, “Turn Myself In,” a song the girls performed on the Headlines tour last year, and a version of “The Way You Watch Me” without Travie McCoy.

The single will be released on May 14.
